Our Heritage
The Timeline
The Roman Catholic Seminary
On May 15, 1839, the Roman Catholic Seminary, which would later become St. Benedict’s College, was opened in Wolfendhal Street by Rt. Rev. Dr. Vincente de Rosario to provide superior English education.
The Establishment of the College
The Sylvestro-Benedictines designed the college buildings in the style of an Italian Benedictine Monastery. Completed in 1865, it began accommodating day students and boarders under the name St. Benedict's College.
Arrival of De La Salle Brothers
On May 1, 1868, a new group of De La Salle Brothers, led by Brother Pastoris, officially took charge of St. Benedict’s. Brother Modeste Marie later became the first official Director.
American Leadership Era
Brother Maurice Josephus, the first American Director, oversaw the College's transition and achieved its first Cambridge Senior Examination successes, leading an era of American leadership until 1908.
First Ceylonese Director
Brother Luke Gregory became the first Ceylonese Director (1931-1939). He oversaw the construction of a three-story building, initiated work on a playground, and successfully re-organized the College post-war.
